Madison Crook uses play therapy to help children explore underlying emotions and increase their belief in themselves.

Therapy at Riverbend is probably not what you’ve seen on TV.

In our sessions, I usually like to be active, goofy, engaged, and laid-back while also being attuned to each individual’s needs. My goal is that everyone who walks into my office will feel warmly welcomed and find a space where they feel at ease. I work with you and your child to identify your goals together, so that we can collaboratively create a treatment plan together.

When enter my building’s lobby, you’ll find yourself in a relaxing environment with refreshments and comfortable seating to rest while you wait. The entire building is dedicated to creating a therapeutic space for you! My therapy room is filled with toys, games, and activities designed to make therapy engaging for everyone.

In your first appointment, I’ll ask you a lot of questions to learn more about your family, your child’s concerns, and your goals for your child. We will also go over all of the paperwork, policies, and questionnaires together. Then we spend the next few sessions creating a specific plan together in order to achieve your goals!

After the first few sessions, therapy can look different depending on what approach we determine is best for your child.

If we decide that it’s best for me to provide individual sessions using play therapy, CBT, gradual-exposure therapy, or another evidence-based approach, I’ll spend a lot of time building a positive, trusting relationship with them. I use tons of play therapy, game-based interventions, and art therapy-based techniques to help them explore their thoughts, process their emotions, and develop skills to help them with their goals.

For families who participate in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT for short) or Theraplay, treatment usually begins with a baseline observation session, followed by a caregiver training session to learn therapeutic skills that we will use together to help your child, then subsequent coaching with you and your child practicing fun therapeutic skills together!

During PCIT coaching sessions, you and your child are in my playroom while I am in my observation room, in order to allow your child to engage freely with you without distracting them. We will both wear "bug-in-the-ear" devices so that I can provide in-the-moment coaching on skills you are learning to help your child!

During Theraplay coaching sessions, I am in the room with the you and your child as we all engage in family play-therapy activities that target the specific areas of need we have identified together during the previous sessions.

Depending on your goals, we may also choose to meet at a public location, such as a park or ice cream store, to practice building skills in those situations. We will also have some family therapy sessions where I will share with you what your child has been learning and discuss ways to help them at home.
